In January 2022, the MA in Arts and Ecology will begin at Dartington Arts School. As a space for dialogue and exploration, we are establishing a residency alongside the academic programme. This year, we are looking to host practitioners who are exploring interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaboration.

We are inviting applications for a three-week residency at Dartington. These three weeks start on 6th September and lead up to the Cyfest 14: Ferment festival, which takes place from 17th to 27th September. Ferment examines the theme of fermentation through the dual lenses of art and science. Through art installations, workshops and talks, we will be exploring the metamorphoses that fermentation represents.

Candidates may have a background in the arts, sciences, and technology; or perhaps culinary practices, gardening, and agriculture. You can apply on your own or with others. We have space for four people to be in residence. We don’t expect any particular outcomes from the residency, but offer the Ferment festival as a platform for presenting outcomes if that is appropriate. We will ask that the people who join this initial exploratory residency work with us to refine our vision and programme for future years.

The residency offers accommodation for three weeks, studio space, travel (within the UK) to and from Dartington, the opportunity to show, exhibit, present at the Festival. From next year we will establish the arts and ecology residencies as an annual programme.

Alongside the Dartington residency programme we are working on long-term partnerships with:

CRI: cri-paris.org >
CYLAND: cyland.org/lab >
Leonardo/ISAST: leonardo.info >

These partnerships will include commitment to arts and ecology residencies hosted by each partner. The aim is to establish and grow a network of residencies committed to place-based enquiry, deep transformational collaboration, and transdisciplinary practices.

Applications are invited from individuals and collaborating partners. The applications will be assessed by an international panel comprising:

Anna Frants, Director CYLAND
Gordon Knox, Independent Curator
Lucia Pietroiusti, General Ecology Curator
Francesca Bertolotti Bailey, Director Cove Park
Gäell Mainguy, Director CRI Paris
Danielle Siembieda, MD Leonardo/ISAST
Ansuman Biswas, Artist
Alan Boldon CEO Dartington Trust
Natasha Rivett Carnac, Arts and Ecology Curator, Dartington Trust

To apply please email a personal statement responding with why you want to do this residency, your portfolio and CV to fermentresidency@dartington.org before midnight on 25th August. The residency starts on 6th September 2021.
