About this course
Woodcraft for Well-being is an immersive nature-based experience centred around learning the craft of whittling with a mindful approach. The session focuses on fostering mental health and well-being whilst participants engage in woodland crafts such as spoon carving, meanwhile benefiting from peer support, nature immersion, and the myriad benefits of hand carving wood.
The outcomes are remarkable, with participants reporting significant improvements in both physical and mental health. So far, 100% of attendees have recommended the sessions to others. The sessions are also funded by the NHS Recovery and Learning community, serving as social prescribing activities for adults requiring mental health support and access to creative well-being opportunities
what to bring
All materials and tools will be provided.
TUTORS
alex finberg
Alex is a British green wood worker based in South Devon, using age old carving techniques to carve wood into beautiful, functional woodenware from wind fallen and sustainably cut local trees. He is an advocate for the new wood culture movement and the rediscovering of our relationship to the origins of everyday things, the trees they grew from and the people who made them.
OUR LEARNING COMMUNITY
Our courses are part of the wider Learning programme at Dartington, and you will join a community of students on site studying at Schumacher College and Dartington Arts School as well as other short course participants, volunteers and visitors.
While you are here we invite you to take part in our learning community life by attending morning meetings, taking part in activities such as meal preparation and clearing, and evening social events. This is entirely voluntary, but participants tell us that taking part adds to their experience at Dartington.
