A short documentary about Mary Bartlett and her Travels with Unicorns.
Mary says: “My wonderful history primary school teacher once said ‘Please don’t ask me any more questions today’. I have always been curious and lucky to have travelled widely when a child as my father was a signalman on the railway and could travel in the UK and Europe on affordable fares. The students who filmed the unicorn were patient and professional, and helped me to continue the quest which has always been co-operation with many friends, artists and craftspeople. To be elected as a fellow of the Linnaean Society is a credit to their support.”

The finest coursework is a reflection of a student’s commitment to excellence. It showcases their ability to engage with complex topics, think critically, and produce high-quality work. A strong coursework record is an important indicator of academic potential and can open doors to future opportunities.

Dear Mary,
I was one of Schumacher students, back in 2011, and I still fondly remember the Dartington tour you gave us.
I was reminded of you in my dream last night – you took me to Dartington again, hence I found this wonderful video about precious Unicorns. Thank you Mary and best wishes ahead,
Brigita
Dear Ms Bartlett
I am writing because your name, not mentioned in the Kipling Society feature on Kipling’s use of the swastika in 1999 saying that a craft bookbinder at Dartington had acquired the Macmillan printing block of Lockwood Kipling’s Ganesha symbol with swastika, with evidence of the ugly symbol’s removal, has now been provided to me by Prof. David Prior at Falmouth, with which Dartington College was merged.
I am the largest Kipling collector in the world, my collection now at Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, where I serve as the Chair of the alumni group the Yale Library Associates. I am also one of the two American vice presidents of the Kipling Society. For its journal, I have researched and written an article on Kipling’s use of the swastika, and in my 2010 bibliography of Rudyard Kipling, published by the British Museum in 2010, I had included an appendix on Kipling’s use of the Ganesha and its attendant symbol, the swastika, and how he had ordered Macmillan and Doubleday, his UK and US publishers, to cease using it in mid-1933.
Do you still have that altered printing block? Could you send me a photograph of it to my gmail account? And do you have any plans for its disposition? I would be interested in buying it for Yale’s collection of Kiplingiana, the largest in the world, if there is no opportunity to leave it to another organization which you favor.
Dearest Mary,
I have been quite remiss in the task you set me to connect you with legends and myths of the Narwhal from the original people of northern Canada😳
It has been, what – 2 years? – since we met at your home at Dartington through my Sister, Catherine Gaze.
Well… I am sending this last minute but at least you can perhaps get a good contact out of the following information:

Many Rainbow Unicorn Blessings!🙏🌈💕
Dawn from Québec
Dear Dawn,
thank you for the comment.
I have several text books on Narwhals and did a small booklet on the Crafts of Unicorns in which they feature.
Am working on another over the next year which will feature them.
If you send me and address, I think you have my home one I will put one in the post to encourage you to continue the quest.
Good wishes,
Mary
Hello Mary I have been trying to find your contact details as I need your wisdom to help put these glass cloches together! Not sure if you have our number, hope you are well,
Mary, Lower Dean
Dear Mary,
Sorry haven’t looked at this for sometime.
If you want to send me your phone number to my dartington address mary.bartlett@datington.org
I will give you a ring and fix a time.
Good wishes,
Mary
Wonderful film from an inspiring woman. Thanks Mary for keeping the true spirit of the Unicorn alive!
Dear Si,
thank you for so many projects. The Whack poster, the wonderful illustrations for The Unicorn and the Professor which was shortlisted for The British Book awards 2018 and the other books we have made. The unicorn also appreciates when you and Ros sing in the garden.
Good wishes for future projects we may do.
Mary
Greetings from Wye and East Kent. Thank you Mary for your delightful exploration of all things ‘unicorn’. A reminder for us of our brief visit to Dartington back in 2014 which happily included some time with you. We have now properly retired after 50 years of Garden Design and land management, but plenty to occupy us, much like yourself.
We continue to follow the ups and downs of Dartington’s progress towards a brighter future.
Dear Francis and Lucy,
thank you for watching the film. It was a pleasure to make with the students. Three days of filming! 30 years of research and still ongoing. Part of the local biodynamic group so just breeding open pollinated seed and planting the garden.
Good wishes,
Mary
